Mastercard opened developer access this week to an agent-payment system built on x402

On October 20, at Cloudflare Connect in San Francisco, Mastercard opened developer "Early Access" to Agent Pay for Machines (AP4M), infrastructure for AI agents to pay for digital services on a business's behalf, built on x402. TechTimes reports the announcement "marks the first time developers outside Mastercard's original pilot cohort can begin building on the rails," with a developer portal live at ap4m.build/info. The agent wallet in Mastercard's own stack, BVNK, is itself a Mastercard subsidiary: TechTimes reports Mastercard completed its $1.8 billion acquisition of BVNK in August, so a card network's own wallet business now settles through Base.

Mastercard's own description of the mechanism: a business gives an agent a task and a spending limit; when the agent hits a paid service, "the agent creates a digitally signed payment voucher, which is a secure promise to pay within its approved limit. The provider verifies it, delivers the service and the work continues." Mastercard says "providers can combine vouchers and redeem them later," which we read as settlement arriving on Base in batches rather than one at a time.

Mastercard demonstrated the system live with Hype, which it describes as "a marketing agency that already uses AI agents in its campaign work." Hype gave an agent a task, plan a campaign for a protein bar launch, and a spending limit. On what Mastercard calls "an agent platform such as Amazon Bedrock AgentCore," the agent bought social media research from AIsa and eight campaign images through Cloudflare's AI Gateway. The agent made nine payments to two merchants under one spending limit, which Mastercard says needed "no separate accounts, API keys or invoices." The release names seven pilot partners, including Coinbase, which provides the wallet infrastructure that funds the agent, and Base, the on-chain settlement network.

TechTimes also quoted Mastercard Chief Product Officer Jorn Lambert calling AP4M the catalyst for "a superbloom of AI business models," and reported that Coinbase Developer Platform has processed more than 100 million x402 payments across Base and Solana: a figure Coinbase reports about itself. The same article notes Visa built a separate system for the same problem, a Trusted Agent Protocol on Cloudflare's Web Bot Auth standard, rather than on x402. Mastercard is opening this to developers in a market where, by x402stats.io's count, 92 of 38,249 seller addresses active on its tracked facilitators over the past 30 days pass its own wash-trading filter.

q402.quackai.ai, a previously listed x402 service, disappeared from dailyelo's tracked catalog between October 21 and 22, one of the 29 domains this week's count lost.

Horse Truth, a racing-data seller, charges $1.00 a call for a race field, 1,000 times the $0.001 it charges for looking up a horse, according to its developer page, horsetruth.com.au/developers/machine, as checked by a contributor on October 14 whose finding we bought.

goal402-x402.percha.workers.dev quotes a tenth of a cent for its league table and then refuses payment at that price, a contributor finding we bought this week, which we reproduced against the endpoint on October 16.

Tuesday's review of three.ws found its model-check and market-pulse tools priced and working exactly as advertised, for fractions of a cent, but its skill marketplace, a catalog of 45 skills from 27 other agents, refused every skill we tried to buy.
